Project Background

‘Strengthening the Disaster Resilience Capacity of Housing Solution’, the USAID funded project is a part of the USAID/Nepal Tayar Nepal- Improved Disaster Risk Management (DRM) Project (the project which is being implemented by DAI Global LLC). The project has been designed aligned with Tayar Nepal’s two-pronged stronger systems + Safer Settlement Approach that strengthen institutions and capacities at the national, provincial, and local levels to strengthen Nepal’s resilience to natural and non-natural disasters.
Sahara Nepal, a national NGO located in Jhapa, Nepal, is implementing the project in four municipalities: Damak Municipality and Kamal Rural Municipality in Jhapa District Rajapur Municipality in Bardiya District, and Lamkichuha Municipality in Kailali in the period from19 October 2020 to 15 October 2021.

Major Activities

Conduct project kick-off meetings with municipalities and stakeholders,

Conduct desk study on risk and vulnerability for earthquake, flood, and fire disaster,

Settlement and site-specific study and design of earthquake, flood, and fire resilient houses in 4 municipalities,

Design 4 prototypes of earthquake, flood and fire resilient houses and prototype testing,

Develop and produce training packages, awareness materials, and standard procedures for earthquake, flood, and fire resilient building,

Conduct training on earthquake, flood, and fire resilient buildings to local youth skills,

Technical support to construct earthquake, flood, and fire resilient demonstration houses,

Conduct training on earthquake, flood and fire resilient building technology for municipal government and construction stakeholders,

Conduct community-level awareness on earthquake, flood, and fire resilient housing solutions,

Collaborate with municipalities to incorporate the designed prototype as municipal recommended design,

Conduct cross-learning and sharing workshop in four municipalities.
