SAHARA Nepal is a non-governmental organization (NGO) registered in accordance with the Section (4) of the Organization Registration Act 2034 BS and affiliated with the Social Welfare Council in accordance with the Section (13) of the Social Welfare Act 2049 BS of the Government of Nepal in 2051 BS (1994 AD). SAHARA is an autonomous and non-profit making non-governmental organization groomed from grass root level and led by young, dynamic and result oriented development professionals.

SAHARA- Nepal works along with the poor and marginalized people living at the bottom of the society, from the date of its inception, 1994. Sahara Nepal focuses on livelihood, public health, empowerment, environment and energy, good governance, and humanitarian service. The target beneficiaries are women, indigenous people, children, marginal farmer, daily wage laborer and needy people. SAHARA-Nepal directly works with them and strives to strengthen their capacity to reduce socio-economic, cultural, and political vulnerabilities and disparities.

In the year 1994, a group of youths of Arjundhara VDC, Jhapa, Nepal decided to form a development organization towards contributing for the overall development of the vicinity. Accordingly, a 26 member’s committee was formed under the chair of Mr. Lalraj Subedi coordinated by Mr. Mahendra Kumar Giri, a dynamic and young person. Moreover, the committee officially registered at DAO Jhapa and SWC in the consequent year. The main objectives of the organization were to increase the community awareness and enhance socio-economy of the rural poor and minorities. Since then, SAHARA has been working in rural community empowerment and socio-economic upliftment from the perspective of bottom-up approach and participatory approach along with human rights and good governance.

With the passage of time, SAHARA –Nepal has expanded to one of the fast-growing grass root NGOs in Jhapa district in terms of the program diversity as well as the geographical area coverage by program activities and the size of the organization. SAHARA-Nepal has extended its service area not only in the Eastern Region but also in the various districts of Nepal (33 districts) with diverse programs. SAHARA becomes a brand name in Jhapa, Morang, Sunsari and Ilam with its fast and result oriented services. SAHARA has its sister organization called Sahara SACCOS, which is enriched with more than 142,000 women members into socio-economic realm through micro saving and credit facilities. SAHARA, with the continuous engagement of more than 92 staffs and volunteers, has successfully implemented various development programs and projects in more than 30 districts of the country. SAHARA Nepal has successfully implemented 64 projects and established strong networks among 35 donor agencies and partner organizations. SAHARA has significant records of accomplishment in its effort for strengthening community and program implementation modalities, which have been attributed to exclusive professionalism regarding human resource management, project implementation and community empowerments.
